AC/DC Fuel Transfer Pump Selection Guide

If you need to supply fuel to the system from the vehicle or an independent battery, a DC pump should be selected; if there are fixed refueling stations and higher requirements for flow rate or continuous operation time, an AC pump usually has more advantages. In most applications, a 12V DC pump (with a flow rate of 10 – 20 gallons per minute) can meet the fuel transfer needs from a 55-gallon barrel.

The influence of power supply type on flow and duty cycle

The core difference between AC pumps and DC pumps lies in the power supply type, but the power supply type also affects the configuration, portability, and operating duration of the equipment. There is no absolute superiority or inferiority for both types of power supply, and it needs to be determined based on specific working conditions.

DC pumps operate with DC power provided by batteries, suitable for environments without access to mains electricity. AC pumps use plug power, fixed power supply systems, or generator-provided AC power.

In terms of flow rate, it is usually measured in gallons per minute (GPM) or liters per minute (LPM). The flow rate of portable DC pumps is generally about 12 – 20 GPM, and some AC pumps can reach 20 – 35 GPM. These values are estimated ranges, and the actual flow rate is affected by factors such as the pump body, fuel properties, and hoses.

The duty cycle is also not to be ignored. The duty cycle refers to the time that the equipment can operate continuously before needing to rest. Some 12V direct current pumps can operate for 30 minutes, and then need to rest for 30 minutes before operating again; the duty cycle of other pumps varies. AC pumps usually can operate continuously, but not all models have this capability.

Applicable scenarios for DC fuel transfer pumps

DC fuel transfer pumps are suitable for situations where it is impossible to reach a fixed gas station and where on-site fueling for equipment is required. They can operate using the vehicle or an independent battery and are widely used in service vehicles, farms, construction sites, ships, and other isolated equipment.

12V DC fuel transfer pumps are particularly suitable for transferring diesel from barrels or portable fuel tanks to machinery. 24V DC fuel transfer pumps are suitable for equipment that is already equipped with 24V electrical systems. Note that the power supply voltage must match the pump voltage.

Due to restrictions from hoses, fuel conditions, and fluctuations in flow during operation, the actual transfer time may be higher than expected.

Applicable scenarios for AC fuel transfer pumps

AC fuel transfer pumps are suitable for fixed refueling locations such as workshops, warehouses, farm fuel stations, and fleet stations. In cases where power supply is sufficient, these pumps usually do not need to rely on vehicle batteries to complete fuel transfer.

The most common AC fuel pumps are powered by 110V or 230V, depending on the product and power supply configuration. Some AC fuel pumps have a flow rate of approximately 20 – 35 gallons per minute.
